Believe What He Says

One night my wife and I were just about finished getting our boys ready for bed, when I noticed my oldest son's pajama pants no longer went all the way to his ankle. (My first realization was, “Wow, this little guy is growing fast. When mommy sees him outgrowing these glow in the dark teddy bear pajamas, she may get a touch emotional).
I then whispered to Andy, “Buddy, you’re so tall!” He quickly pulled away from me, looked straight into my eyes and smiled without saying a word. He was so thrilled. He turned to my wife and joyfully exclaimed, “I’m tall mommy!”
What I said to him in a whisper he repeated with a shout. I never
anticipated my observation would touch him so deeply. This was a special moment. Special because Andy did something very simple, yet significant. He believed what I said about him. He believed what I told him. He received with assurance that what daddy was telling him was true. When I whispered, “you’re so tall,” Andy didn’t go grab a yardstick and measure himself. He
didn’t even glance down at his feet to see his bare ankles that were not
supposed to be showing. I told him he was tall, and he believed
me.
It filled me with joy to see my son taking me at my word, especially
regarding what I said about him, a child I so dearly love. How often does God speak to us through his Holy Spirit, only for us to disregard it, ignore it, or simply not believe it to be true?
The Bible contains remarkable declarations about us. Here's one: "For we are God's masterpiece" (Eph 2:10).
And this one: “God created human beings in His own image. In the image of God He created them" (Gen 1:27).  What do we do when we hear these?
My son believed what I said about him. He had no reason to doubt. God tells us in His Word we are made in His image...that we are masterpieces of creation. Yet we struggle to find value in ourselves.
Rest in His fondness for you as He shares, "I have loved you with an everlasting love" and that "God will never leave you nor forsake you"  (Jer 31:3 & Deut 31:6).
What do we do with these words of hope spoken by God? Do we put our heads down and sigh, doubting it is true? Maybe mumble, "its not true for me." Or do we listen to what God says to us...about us...look up in stunned silence, smile and quickly turn to the nearest soul and repeat enthusiastically what He says?
The Psalmist declared, “You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” He got it, he believed God at His Word.  I was so happy my son took me at my mine, simply believing what I said about him. I wonder how life would change for us if we did the same...if we believed what God says about us: that he loves us, created us, and wants to be with us, forever.

    about the writer...

Andrew is thankful he's had the opportunity to do some cool things so far... drummer and lead singer in a rock 'n' roll band, TV Sports Reporter, and earn a couple of Master's degrees along the way. He's glad he has a great wife to help him navigate parenthood, especially now that his boys are chasing around a little sister. He hopes this site helps you grow closer to God and your children.
